Competition Time!

Great news as our Village Art Group of five artists here in the little village of Colaton Raleigh have been short-listed for the prize of a show at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, UK. This predigest award winning venue this gives us the opportunity to really show what the world has been missing!

The theme we have been asked to submit on is ‘Botanical’ so I hope you like our entry.

Please, if you are in the Exeter area then vote for ‘Village Art’ offline in the Express & Echo this month. Many thanks from all of us here in deepest darkest Devon!

Hats

ahat4 tI was attracted by the magnificent structure of hats. A hat3 tEspecially the most flamboyant.Awh4 t They provide such a great subject for expression and of color & form. I have tried to be loyal to my style, palette, medium and presentation. Compromise of these would be untruthful.

I just wish more people wore hats today!

Landscape – The Eye Sees but the Heart Paints.

I have been struggling with painting my local landscape. I start from nature but remain totally overcome by my heart. The latter rules my head once I have brush in hand. How about you?

I have been influenced by looking at background landscapes from work pre-renaissance. Not since the RomansRomans had landscape been a subject in itself!

Later Christian artMedi1 used it to fill out the background. But I love the shapes, the forms and almost ‘that will do’ effect.

From there I leap to Roger Fry’s clarion call:

‘We may, then, dispense once and for all with the idea of likeness to Nature, of correctness or incorrectness as a test, and consider only whether the emotional elements of design inherent in natural form are adequately discovered, unless, indeed, the emotional idea depends at any point upon likeness or completeness of representation.’

Roger Fry, Vision & Design, p25, 1920.

So what to do with this freedom – how to reinvent landscape art as nature through the human heart?cropped-exe1-webpage-header.jpg

Fauvist Flowers

Hi art lovers. I am taking the plunge into painting flowers. I am loving it and I hope you do too! Happy painting everyone.

I juts love painting quickly with more feeling than precision. The results are as much a surprise to me as anyone else!

Changing Landscape

The landscape of Britain is an amazing consequence of change over thousands of years.

Devon hills

For me it provides magical inspiration for my art but moreover, living as I do in the beautiful shire of Devon, I am spiritually lifted everyday by its splendor.
houses and hills exhibition 1

The landscape today as largely defined by agriculture is a riot of small green fields dotted with sheep or cattle, surrounded by high banked hedgerows, narrow lanes, small ancient church endowed villages of gorgeous thatched cottages. Villagescape4.1 t

The world continues to move on of course and what it will all look like in another hundred years or so I will never know. Still, I do know that farming accounts for less that 1% of the UK’s GDP so if we continue to chase economic growth at all costs then the views will not remain as they are for too much longer.

So whilst I am here I will continue to capture, in my own way, how it looked today so that others not so lucky to live here or will come along later can enjoy the moment too. exe Patron image

I have just completed my first set of three prints from my own original paintings.  They are mounted in a white double mount with a picture aperture of 6″x6″. The frame is white painted wood 12″x12″  under glass and ready to hang.

Villagescape Triptych

Villagescape Triptych

This original expressionist acrylic triptych painting is inspired by my surrounding Devon countryside and its beautiful villages. I paint by instinct and feel my way to deliver a balance of color and space influenced by my love of early 20th Century art such as expressionism, post-impressionism and the Fauvist movement.

English Churches

English Churches

The churches that dot the English landscape inspire me through their connection with the Romans, Celts, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and the Normans. Spire Church 1 They provide a constant reminder of our limited time here whilst they remain seemingly unaltered.Devon Chapel

I can never understand exactly why but breaking an image up as a diptych or triptych seems to work! I enjoy the experience of separateness but at the same time they are just a single image.
