Konstantinos Parthenis was a distinguished Greek painter born, in Alexandria, on this day in 1878. His cosmopolitan background (Italy, Vienna, Paris) seems to have played a role in the development of his eclectic style.
In later times his mature paintings provide an ideal vision of
Greece intertwining its myths and history; the Olympian deities, the Byzantine saints and the heroes of the Greek War of Independence.

The Battle of Gaugamela was a decisive battle of Alexander the Great’s invasion of the Persian Empire. In 331 BCE Alexander’s army of the Hellenic League met the Persian army of Darius III near Gaugamela, close to the modern city of Mosul in Iraq.
Even though heavily outnumbered, Alexander emerged victorious due to his professional army and battlefield tactics.
However, Darius was an amazing leader across his enormous empire, the largest of the age, and his legacy lives on. This painting is a simple reflection on these two amazing leaders of their time.
