Braque2The French Artist Georges Braque was born on the 13th May 1882. He worked in many media and styles including but is often best remembered for the development of Cubism alongside Picasso around 1911. Braque3Prior to painting in the Cubist style he worked in the ‘Fauvist’ manner of Derain and Matisse and in 1907 he successfully exhibited works of in the Salon des Indépendants.

Braque1It was in 1907 that his style became influenced by Paul Cezanne, who had died the year before, after visiting his major retrospective at the Salon d’Automne. It was this show that greatly affected Braque, and others, and ultimately resulted in the advent of Cubism.Braque4

Tamely Framed

FD4 tSome much Art I see in galleries is Tamely Framed. All energy is lost and the fight has moved from aesthetics to money. From the gallery to the work all is lost in simple transactions. Do not give in to your being tamed in this way. Let it be free. Let it soar as you intended.me know

The Collioure Collection

In October 2015 I spent a wonderful week in Collioure, Catalan. I was following in the footsteps of Matisse and Derain 110 years after they ‘invented’ Fauvism whilst staying and painting in this then small unspoiled fishing village.  Old Collioure pic I can fully understand their reaction to the light and amazing sights even after all that time. Collioure is a beautiful place with the mountains behind and the sea in front. Since my return I have painting the village in my own style. I hope you like them!
