The Battle of Gaugamela was a decisive battle of Alexander the Great’s invasion of the Persian Empire. In 331 BCE Alexander’s army of the Hellenic League met the Persian army of Darius III near Gaugamela, close to the modern city of Mosul in Iraq.
Even though heavily outnumbered, Alexander emerged victorious due to his professional army and battlefield tactics.
However, Darius was an amazing leader across his enormous empire, the largest of the age, and his legacy lives on. This painting is a simple reflection on these two amazing leaders of their time.
