In art 1905 was the year of the Fauvists!
In science it was the year of Albert Einstein who introduced the world to the special theory of relativity. He also explained Brownian motion and the photoelectric effect. This was the year of E = mc2 .
Russia had its Revolution of 1905 that caused a wave of mass political and social unrest that spread through vast areas of the Russian Empire whist still embroiled in bloody war with Japan.
In England the title ‘Prime Minister of the United Kingdom’ is officially recognized by Edward VII.
Umberto Boccioni was an influential Italian artist He was to help shape the revolutionary aesthetic of the Futurism movement as one of its principal figures later in this era. In 1905 he was painting these self-portraits.
The German expressionist painter Gabriele Münter painted this picture in 1905. Kandinsky invited Münter to join him at his summer painting classes just south of Munich in the Alps. She accepted, and their relationship became more personal than professional.
Sir William Orpen was an Irish artist who worked mainly in London during 1905 and continued to paint portraits.
The Austrian painter Egon Schiele, protégé of Gustav Klimt, painted this landscape in 1905.
Franz Marc was to found the Der Blaue Reiter Group later in this era. But this year he painted this self- portrait.

Garçon à la Pipe by Pablo Picasso was painted in 1905 when he was 24 years old, during his Rose Period, and soon after he settled in the Montmartre.
In this year a group of German artists formed the Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden. Founding members were Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Later members were Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein and Otto Mueller. The seminal group had a major impact on the evolution of modern art in the 20th century and the creation of expressionism.
Adolf Hölzel was a German artist whose style developed from Impressionism to expressive modernism. He painted this abstract work in this year – tilted ‘Composition in Red’ four years before Kandinsky began his abstract work!
In this year Henri Matisse and André Derain took themselves off to Collioure in the south of France to paint. It was to a seminal time for them and for the history of art. For it was there they developed a new style later to be called Fauvism.
